Option 2: Kigali – Sunrise School Uganda – Lake Bunyonyi
This route is ideal for visitors who want a cultural and human connection: Depart Kigali in the morning and travel through Rwanda’s rolling hills to the border.
After entering Uganda, drive towards Kabale and continue to Sunrise School Uganda, where needy and orphaned children supported by the project are studying.
On arrival, visitors are welcomed by staff and children, with a simple tour of the school compound, dormitory, and classrooms (with prior arrangement).
Life with the Children at Sunrise School, Uganda. To make this part attractive to tourists, present it as a meaningful, respectful cultural experience: Visitors can sit in on a lesson, listen to the children sing or recite poems, and learn about their daily routines, dreams, and challenges.

There is an opportunity to join simple activities such as playing football or netball, reading storybooks with the children, helping with English practice, or joining them for a school meal (depending on the timetable). Guests see the permanent dormitory built for needy and orphaned children and the temporary timber classrooms, understanding directly why permanent classrooms, food support, and other needs are so important.
The visit is designed to be ethical and child-safe, focusing on mutual respect, learning, and long-term support rather than “poverty tourism.”
After the school visit, the journey continues: In the afternoon, drive on to Lake Bunyonyi (about a short drive from Kabale town).
Check in at a lodge by the lake, relax, and reflect on the school visit and the children’s stories.
Guests can be invited to stay connected by sponsoring a child, supporting a classroom, or contributing to projects like the dormitory, library, or computer lab.
Day 2: Lake Bunyonyi – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Early morning transfer from Lake Bunyonyi to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
Join a guided gorilla trekking experience (park regulations and permits apply), hiking through the forest to meet a gorilla family in their natural habitat.
After the trek, return to Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation, reflection, and an evening by the lakeside.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 3: Lake Bunyonyi – Kigali
Breakfast at the lodge and a peaceful morning by the lake.
Optional short boat ride or visit to a local community sunrise school for more time with children, staff, and community members around the school community (depending on time).
Depart from Lake Bunyonyi or from Sunrise School and drive back to Kigali.
Drop-off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.
This tour not only offers a memorable experience with mountain gorillas and Lake Bunyonyi, but can also be linked to supporting Katungu Needy and Orphan Children’s Project, with part of the proceeds going to the children.
